VOR update 1

Cape Town, 1st Stopover Port for VOR 2011-12

The racetrack for the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race, due to start from Alicante in Spain in the autumn of 2011, is now set and the first port of call will be Cape Town, South Africa, making its eighth appearance as host to this premier ocean race. This marks the beginning of the port announcement process for the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 and the rest of the course around the world will be revealed before the end of March.

The course and dates for the Volvo Ocean Race 2011/12

This edition of the race will see a new format for the racing programme in the host cities, including the start city of Alicante, Spain & finish city of Galway, Ireland. For the first time, the Volvo Ocean Race will finish with an In-Port race in Galway. The iconic islands of the Azores in the Atlantic, Fernando de Noronha off the Brazilian coast & the Fastnet Rock, the southern most point of Ireland, all make an appearance on the course.

For the third consecutive Volvo Ocean Race, the Copenhagen-based company will be the official sponsor of satellite and radio communications for the world’s premier ocean race, which starts from Alicane in October 2011.

Two-time Olympic medallist, Ian Walker of Great Britain, has taken the helm as skipper for Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing's 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race title pursuit, as the emirate's newest sporting outfit readies for the 'Everest of Sailing'.

Appointed by the team's backer, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), Walker will lead an 11-strong crew hoping to stake its claim in one of the world’s toughest, most extreme sporting challenges.ADTA, which was behind the emirate's successful bid to become a Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 host city, believes Walker’s appointment is a major coup for Abu Dhabi’s inaugural title tilt.

20th September - The wait is over for the fans of the Volvo Ocean Race Game. The extremely popular online game will be back for the next edition of the race, as the contract has now been signed between Volvo Ocean Race S.L.U and UnitedGames, the designers of the Official Game. The game is set to be bigger and better than before with new features being tested already, to improve the technical and tactical elements for the players.
